In today’s first reading, we read Moses says to the Israelites:
“However, take care and be earnestly on your guard
not to forget the things which your own eyes have seen,
nor let them slip from your memory as long as you live,
but teach them to your children and to your children’s children.”
It feels like everyday, more and more people forget what God has shown them. Everyday we fail to teach our children and chidlren’s children about God.
In some cases, parents have given up on God. It might be because of the busyness of our lives. It might be because of an unpleasant encounter with some at church. It might be because our parents did a poor job of catechizing us. And in the process, we fail to pass on to our children, about God. And we become more miserable every day.
But God doesn’t want us miserable. He doesn’t want us becoming slaves to worldly things like money, status, power, etc. He wants us to be happy. He wants us to know He loves us. He wants the best for us.
So if your experiences have either been non-existing or not good, today is a good day to do something about it. While it may have appeared to be an encounter with God, if it was bad, it probably wasn’t God, but someone trying to influence you that having a relationship with God will cause you misery.
So seek out God by asking people you meet about their experiences with God. If it was a poor experience, move on. If it was a good experience, find out more about it. Ask them to recommend something for you to do – a special prayer, a book, a parish that is uplifting for you to attend, a class to learn more. Take the time to learn more about God, and then work on a way to pass it on to your children and your children’s children, in the way you wish it would have been passed on to you.
