The Epiphany of the Lord
Is 60:1-6; Ps 72:1-2, 7-8, 10-11, 12-13.; Eph 3:2-3a, 5-6; Mt 2:2; Mt 2:1-12

This morning, when I got up, I noticed the house was brighter than normal, there were streams of light coming in around the shades. I first thought maybe the neighbor’s outside lights were on. So when I peaked out the window to find the source of the light, I discovered the moon was shining brightly in the western horizon, reflecting off the snow, bringing light to the darkness.

When I read today’s readings, the image I experienced only a short time earlier, came rushing back to me. It is the perfect image for today, as we celebrate the Epiphany of the Lord. The image we receive from today’s readings are about light coming to the darkness.

Throughout our lives, we all will experience darkness. At times it is sadness at the death of a member of our family or a friend. Other times it might be due to illnesses or injuries. Sometimes we may find ourselves frustrated with our circumstance or disappointment in others. No matter what the cause, it brings a type of darkness into our lives.

When we experience these dark times in our lives, it can cause our true selves to be revealed. There are really only two options. We can hang onto to the darkness and be bitter and angry, causing darkness for others. Or we can turn to God, asking Him for the light to lead us out of the darkness, and in turn bring light to others we journey on throughout our lives. The choice is really up to us.
