Divided

In today’s Gospel reading, it made me think about the current political campaign going on right now in the Republican party. This seems to happen way too much, in both political parties, and probably in other countries also.

Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste
and house will fall against house.

In my past, I followed politics pretty closely. I would often get “wound up” over various candidates, get all the news I could find, etc. But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to realize while it can be important, it is never more important than what God wants us to do. As we read in the first reading:

Thus says the LORD:
This is what I commanded my people:
Listen to my voice;
then I will be your God and you shall be my people.
Walk in all the ways that I command you,
so that you may prosper.

I believe too many people are not doing as God commanded: “Listen to my voice”. If we would truly listen to God’s voice, instead of our own interpretation of God’s voice, the world would be much better. Too many people take select words from the bible and ignore other parts. Too many people are repeating the same mistake Adam and Eve made, they want to be gods. They want to be “in charge”. They want what they want.

But to experience true happiness, we have to learn to let go of all those things. We have to give up our lives and follow God. God loves us. God wants the best for us. God knows what will make us happy. But when we fight amongst ourselves, we become divided. We are laid to waste.

So today, take a look at those areas in your life that make you the most unhappy. Then commit to making a change, to giving up power, giving up control, giving up hatred, give up envy, give up whatever is making you unhappy. And put God in control. Listen to God’s voice. And you will prosper.
