During times of struggle, those times when we most need to completely trust and rely on God, is often the times when we struggle with prayer, when we can become more focused on ourselves.
This past weekend, I heard the story of a member of my parish that after the death of her third child, totally devastated, she was starting to doubt God. She couldn’t understand why God would cause her so much suffering and grief. She was contemplating leaving the Church. It was at this very difficult, and low time in her life, while still attending Mass, mostly focusing on herself, when God spoke to her. As the priest elevated the bread, God revealed Jesus’s face on the bread. The consecrated bread, was truly the Body of Christ.
I see similar experiences from many of the individuals that have gone through the Returning Catholics program. One of the things we tell them, no matter why they left, no matter what they’ve done, it doesn’t matter. God still loves them. God wants to be in their life. For many going through the six week series, they discover how the Church is there to help them on their journey, to help them grow closer to God.
So during this four week of Lent, remember God never forgets you. God loves you more than you can imagine. And God wants to be in your life. Especially during those times of struggle, those times of difficulty, pain, and grief. Even if we forget about Him.
